On behalf of the more than 25,000 people living with Parkinson’s in Arizona, I would like to thank you for attending and supporting Oktoberfest for Parkinson’s 2013. When we started this event nine years ago, there was just a few dozen people gathered around the courtyard at Carefree Station and we raised a few thousand dollars to support ADPA Arizona. This year our crowd surpassed more than 500 attendees and we have raised more than $100,000 since that first year.
The Town of Carefree is not just a beautiful place to live and visit, the town has been very supportive of our event and has hosted us at the Sundial for the past three years. The local businesses all contribute many resources to the event. Our title sponsor this year is locally owned and operated, Hospice of the West. This year we have a new major food sponsor, Venues Café, and we are delighted they wanted to partner with us!! After eight years with the Carefree Station, we hope to have a similar term with Catherine and her crew. These kinds of contributions allow us to operate Oktoberfest with all our expenses covered before the first attendee walks through the gate. This means that every penny of your $25 admission goes to directly support people living with PD here locally.
Last year we added the Sunset Sprint for Parkinson’s 10k/5k Run and the Pedal Over Parkinson’s Family Fun Bike Ride. This gorgeous 3 mile loop through the high Sonoran desert had our participants from last year itching to come back for the most scenic course on the schedule.
Exercise and movement is very important in the management of Parkinson’s. The APDA Arizona Chapter focuses much of its resources on the concept of Neuro Wellness. Several years ago, with the help of the wonderful Fitzgerald family, we partnered with Banner Health to open the first center of its kind in Gilbert, AZ. It was a widely successful venture and now we are set to open three additional locations in Glendale, Sun City and Sun City West in partnership with the Banner Sun Health Research Institute.
If you want to learn more about Neuro Wellness and APDA Arizona, I ask that you please take a few moments and visit our website at www.apdaarizona.org. There is a wonderful 5 minute video on the homepage that overviews our history and services we provide to the community. I would also ask you to consider signing up for our free monthly e-newsletter so you can stay connected with everything happening in the PD community across the state.
On behalf of the APDA Arizona Board of Directors, staff, members and volunteers, I want to thank you once again for taking the time to attend and support our fantastic event. I also want to congratulate our Co-Physician Partners of the Year, Dr. Padma Mahant and Dr. Johan Samanta. Both are Movement Disorders Neurologists in Phoenix and Medical Directors of our Phoenix office for the past 8 years. I look forward to seeing many of you out again next year!!
Thanks to our sponsors for their generous support of our Oktoberfest Event
