The El Tour de Tucson is a high-profile biking event that typically attracts over 9,000 cyclists throughout the United States and worldwide. This is an important fundraising event for the Arizona Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association. The cyclists and their donors typically raise about 25% of the Arizona APDA’s annual budget, and the funds go directly toward providing education, services, and support to individuals with Parkinson’s disease and their families.
This is the 10th year that the Arizona APDA has participated as an El Tour de Tucson beneficiary. You can help us to commemorate this special year by registering to ride for the APDA. Preparing for El Tour is a great chance to improve your overall fitness level while also supporting a good cause. Dr. Cynthia Reed, M.D. is this year’s featured cyclist for the Arizona APDA. She is inviting others to join her on her ride for Parkinson’s. “It takes more than medicine to cope with Parkinson’s,” says Dr. Reed. “It takes education, exercise and a chance to share information. The APDA provides all of that.”
The 31st El Tour de Tucson will take place on November 23rd, 2013. There’s a ride for every level of fitness and you can choose the one that suits you best. The main ride options are distances of 111, 85, 60, or 42 miles. If you think that sounds too strenuous, you can participate in the fun ride at distances of 10, 5 or ¼ miles. Mike Urquhart, a personal trainer at O2 Modern Fitness, will be leading indoor and outdoor training rides to help cyclists prepare for El Tour de Tucson.
If you decide to ride for the APDA, we’ll ask you to set a personal fundraising goal of $500—you’ll be surprised at how easy it is. We’ll help you set up a webpage that will provide you with a convenient method of collecting donations, and the money you raise is tax deductible. For one-on-one assistance with registration and setting up a fundraising page, stop by the Raging Sage Coffeehouse (2458 N. Campbell Ave, Tucson, AZ 85719) on Friday, September 20th from 3-5pm. An APDA employee will be there to assist you while you sip on a cup of coffee.
There are many ways to get involved in El Tour, and another option is to consider joining the APDA’s El Tour Planning Committee. We’re currently searching for additional members to help us organize and prepare for this exciting event. For more information or questions, please call (520) 326-5400.
